Report on participation in the Lausanne Congress 2024

Friends, the last message of L4. A brief report on the Lausanne 2024 Congress. This text is a compilation of excerpts from several others that I have read over the last few days. Thank you for supporting me and kindly allowing me to be a delegate from Brazil at the congress.

Fourth Lausanne Congress on World "Evangelization" (L4)

Theme: Let the Church Declare and Display Christ Together

The First International Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1974 was initiated by Billy Graham, John Stott and others. The second conference in 1989 was held in Manila (Philippines), and the third conference in 2010, in Cape Town (South Africa). The fourth conference was held this year, from September 21 to 28, in Incheon (South Korea). The Congress was attended by over 5,000 delegates in person, representing 202 countries/territories (and another 5,000 online).

The Bible lectures were presented in all sessions and were from the book of Acts. The lectures were excellent, academic and realistic, with relevant and contextual applications. It was good to see that the Bible lecturers were from different nations, men and women, and of different age groups. The days were well structured with themes from the Acts of the Apostles. The Holy Spirit, Persecution, the Council of Jerusalem, the Workplace, Justice, Church Unity, the Environment, Servitude, Brokenness, and taking the gospel to all the world.

The conference had many components that were well integrated and woven together like a beautiful embroidery. The program team, stage management, technical support, and logistics team did an excellent job. There were over 25 discussion sessions that were led by good and competent experts. The discussion sessions were well planned and facilitated. The discussions were documented and we hope to have detailed reports and articles later.

The creation of a live digital artwork was interesting, perhaps most of them were seeing it for the first time. The communication before and during the conference for everyone was excellent. The Lausanne app was an excellent tool that was useful to all delegates. A presentation of the 140-year history of the Korean church as a metaphor with 12 stones in Gilgal was enriching.

The conversations took place around the tables. Six people from various continents were at each table for the plenary sessions. Each table had a code and my table was J19. We discussed, shared and prayed together. We also sat at the table in the gap meetings. Yes, the conversations took place during breaks, at meal times, during travel time and over coffee in the cafeteria. New connections and new collaborations took place, which cannot be counted, but the fruits will be revealed in eternity.

I was impressed by:

1- with such different people, representatives of so many local churches spread across the planet, all united.

2- in different places and times of the congress, so many different people, coming together and praying together. Small groups of 2, 3, 4, 5.

I missed:

1- a more emphatic presentation in the plenary of the data on the unfinished task of the church. However, this was contemplated in the "State of the Great Commission Report".

2- musical diversity. The music was good. However, it represented only one culture. After all, we had 202 countries/territories.

I am concerned:

1- the congress was designed to reflect on various gaps in the church's action. However, I think there is too much focus on the city and technology environment (social groups), to the detriment of the most distant and forgotten places. Normally, these distant places are where the "Unreached Peoples" (cultural groups) are.

On the last day, after the conference, I had the opportunity to go with the South Korean church to learn a little about the history and challenges related to the work of the church in North Korea. The fields are green.

May the church proclaim and demonstrate Christ, united. If the church unites, it may be the last global conference before the Lord Jesus Christ comes!
